Il museo della Rocca Paolina a Perugia

After a series of definitions of what can be considered as a city museum and in particular as a special urban area, the paper introduces the project for the Rocca Paolina in Perugia which was implemented seven years ago. It consists of a sequence of four rooms located underneath the former fortress which was built up in 1540 after the conquest of the city by Pope Paul III and its following incorporation in the Pontifical State.
Once Perugia was joint to the unifi ed Italy in 1860, the fortress was demolished. Its corresponding space was taken by the new Government in order to raise new public buildings. Thanks to a series of pictures, plans, maps and historical records, the museum provides now visitors with a wide spectrum of information about both the fortress itself and the city where it was located for about three centuries. The complex is finally thought as a further stimulus affecting the tourist and increasing its potential attitude to consider the city as a whole.
