Abstract: This collection of essays on Lombardy during the Spanish and Austrian domination does not limit itself to underlining the role of water and weapons, as appears from the title, but opens up to multiple dimensions, also proposing a comparison with the other Italian regional states (State Savoy and the Republic of Venice). These aspects range from urban and regional history to the history of trade, consumption and economic policies, from the history of architecture to international relations, from irrigation and lake uses to social history analyzed through the integration of gypsies in the Lombard context.
