The problem of describing the contemporary city, just as that of constructing a common space for discussing and sharing experiences, indispensable for achieving harmonious and communicable choices, has produced structures with differing objectives, strategies and contexts, in an attempt to describe the city’s transformations encompassing the many figures involved in them. The survey illustrates some of the experiences which have attempted to broach these two aspects simultaneously, ranging from the early exposition spaces and the Anglo-Saxon Neighborhood Houses to the documentation and exhibition centers that opened in a few European cities at the end of the 1980s and the most recent structures in Italy and Europe.
