The spice merchant François Valesque’s book of memoirs, still unpublished, is the only sample of this genre in Lyon: it is a daily journal about his work as an echevin, in the year 1762. It allows several levels of readings and analysis about the local political life. The study of the homage and politeness forms provides a comprehensive representation of the inner hierarchies of the main bodies of the city. The analysis of the Consulate daily journal, enlightens us about the cadence of the local politics. The map representation of the official procession routes, exhibits a peculiar use of the urban space and shows us as the Consulate offers itself to the people contact only when invests itself with thaumaturgic roles. A city official, the author of multiple aspects of urban transformation, opposes a city ignored.
