Abstract: This work presents the characters that control the dynamic equilib­rium of the Tiber and the typical facies of its alluvial deposits. Through the positioning of the Curatores alvei Tiberis et Riparum’ Cippi, the movements of the banks of the Tiber after the late Republican and Imperial age have been reconstructed. The position and evolution of the Portus Tiberinus from the Archaic period to the backfilling prior to 120 B.C. is reconstructed on the basis of data on structures and monuments present in the Foro Boarium.
