The aim of the present study is to locate and analyze pictorial cycles in which the urban scene is the main subject. These are often situated in buildings that were the seat of an authority, be it religious, political or family. In creating a detailed mapping of the “city frescoes” phenomena, the anthropological aspect is also studied: while itself a meaningful gesture due to the complex underlying factors, the reproduction of a space perceived as significant on a lasting support reveals the “sentiment” towards space, a central issue. The aspects that must be taken into account are numerous: how the images were constructed, the client and the artist’s specific contributions, the cultural context and how such messages came across. All this implies a multidisciplinary approach to urban history, in which the history of urban representation becomes a privileged observatory.
